My Teaching Style

As a photographer, one of my passions is teaching and inspiring others to be the best artists they can be. I pursue this passion by teaching the art of photography, working with each individual to educate and motivate. In addition to the technical aspects, one of my objectives is to encourage photographers to capture the spirit and energy of a place or person in photographs.

My teaching style includes classroom lectures, presentations and demonstrations, as well as plenty of field shooting sessions and constructive critiques of images. I am 100% available to my students both in the classroom and in field. I never shoot for myself during a workshop. I fully understand the amount of time, money and energy it takes to attend a workshop. My goal is to make each workshop as educational, inspiring and fun as possible for those participating in my workshops. I am extremely grateful to those who have attended my workshops in the past and the future as they allow me the chance to do what I love.

2009 Workshops

Once again, in 2009, I will be teaching workshops through Radiant Vista. The 2009 workshops are not yet listed on the site.

Craig Tanner, with whom I teach many workshops, has announced two of our 2009 Workshops, Next Step in March and Street Portraiture, on his site. Please contact me or Craig if you are interested in either of these workshops.

I will also be teaching a Foundation for Photography: For Women Only in Savannah from Wednesday morning, April 15, 2009 at 8:00 AM through Sunday, April19, 2009 at 2:00 PM. The testimonials for this workshop in 2008 tell you about the fun we had and how much everyone learned.

Foundation in Photography: For Women Only, April 15-19, 2009

The Foundations in Photography class for Women Only is the perfect class for women interested in learning the basics of photography in a nurturing and supportive environment, share experiences, make new friends and enjoy our time together. Each participant will receive one-on-one attention to answer questions, improve your photography and encourage creativity. This class is ideal for women photographers who are just moving up to the digital SLR, as well as those who want a thorough review of the basic concepts of photography. We will extensively cover all of the foundation concepts of photography and explore the creative use of these concepts to improve your photography. This class is designed for the beginner to lower intermediate level.

The technical concepts explored are camera set up, f-stops and shutter speeds, depth of field, exposure, stopped and implied motion, information on ISO settings, understanding histograms, light and how it affects you images, bracketing your exposures and exposure compensation. By the end of the four and a half days, you will be quite comfortable using your camera entirely in manual mode.

Marti also takes you through a series of exercises designed to improve your creativity through the use of the compositional elements. Using the camera to create images that go beyond the documentary mode is one of the main objectives of this class.

The class consists of classroom lectures and field shooting assignments. Most of the field shooting assignments will be in the early mornings and the late afternoons/evenings. Most of the classroom lectures and presentations will be during the middle of the day.

To benefit most from this workshop, you need a digital camera with manually adjustable f-stops, shutter speeds and ISO. You also need to be familiar with your computer. You need to be able to download your images to your computer and put them on a media card or jump drive to turn in for class critique. Having Adobe Photoshop Elements or Photoshop CS3 on your computer will be extremely helpful. Supportive review of field assignments will be a big part of this workshop.

This class will leave you with the skill set to creatively use the foundation concepts to improve your photography, allowing you to move forward with confidence and inspire you to try new things and set new goals for your photography.

The beautiful city of Savannah, Georgia, is the backdrop for expanding your photographic horizons. Marti is an experienced teacher who provides a nurturing, supportive and encouraging environment for your learning experience.

Class starts at 8:00 AM on Wednesday morning April 15 and ends on Sunday afternoon, April 19, at 1:00 PM

This class is limited to 12 students.
The price of the tuition for this workshop is $945.

Please contact me if you are interested in this workshop.
